The Silver City Ranger District of the Gila National Forest is comprised of three areas, the Burro Mountain region, the portion just west from Emory Pass of the Black Range and the area surrounding Silver City. City of Rocks State Park is accessed off State Route 61 in southwestern New Mexico. The park is named after the monolithic rock structures, formed of volcanic ash some 30 million years ago, that are located throughout the landscape. This is one of the main attractions in the area; the national park is over five hundred acres in size. The cliffs lie on the edge of the Gila Wilderness and because it's in a national park it will be preserved. Over five hundred people visited the dwellings last year.
